The sirens sound when the Plaseqta is activated and a flight is diverted due to the fire in a sulfur ship in Constantí
At 2:15 p.m. a fire broke out at the Afepasa company (Azufrera y Fertilizadores Pallarès). The warehouse is located on Calle Europa in the industrial estate, in Constantino.
The Center for Operational Coordination of Catalonia (Cecat) has activated the Plaseqta first in the alert phase and at around four in the afternoon in the emergency phase. That is why the sirens of the industrial estate have sounded, one hour and 45 minutes after the fire started.
The two sirens have sounded in the aforementioned industrial estate and the confinement only affects this area, not the urban center of Constantí.
People who have heard the sirens have to confine themselves to the nearest building. They have to close doors and windows and wait for new instructions.
At five in the afternoon the sirens continued to sound in the polygon, indicating that the emergency was continuing and the confinement had not been lifted.
According to some information, a deflagration could have been produced from static electricity. This has caused a fire in a large ship, where there is stored sulfur. The wind is heading north and at the moment it does not affect any population center.
The industry is distributed in three warehouses: one has been able to be divided into sectors, in the other the fire affected the roof and in the third, where the pallets are, those that have burned are being separated from those that have not.
A column of black and white smoke is affecting the ships around it, while Europa Street has been cut off to traffic by the Mossos d'Esquadra and the Constantí Local Police. Shortly after, Alemanya street was also cut off.
16 fire departments from the Tarragona, Reus, Montblanc and Cambrils parks, in addition to the Emergency Region, are taking part in the extinction.
Firefighters of the Generalitat have confirmed that there is sulfur inside the ship. This product, when burned, can produce sulfur dioxide. It is the same gas that was produced during the eruption of the La Palma volcano.
The most common symptoms of sulfur dioxide are: shortness of breath, headache, cough, altered breathing rhythm, burning of the nose and throat, burning of the eyes, and inflammation or infection of the airways and destruction of areas of the lung (if exposure is higher).
The 112 emergency telephone number has initially received two calls warning of the fire: one from Afepasa itself and the other from a neighboring company. At five in the afternoon there were already 70, most of them asking for information.
The SEM has moved to the scene two land units, three Orca units -responsible for prevention and health care in special events-, two commands and a joint Bombers-SEM team. Two people have been treated: one of a less serious nature, who has been evacuated to the Joan XXIII Hospital, and one discharged on the spot.
On the other hand, the Catalan Traffic Service has reported at 5:38 p.m. that the TP-7225 road, which goes from Reus to El Morell, has been cut.
It would be deactivated soon
The delegate of the Government of the Generalitat in Tarragona, Àngel Xifré, pointed out at 5:30 p.m. that the levels of sulfur oxide in the stations closest to the polygon were low, so the Plaseqta would be deactivated in a short space of time.
Xifré has commented that the plan has been activated at the moment that they have seen that the fire had affected the outside and has recalled that the company was not affected by the Seveso directive, which is the regulation of serious accidents.
He has also pointed out that, preventively, two schools and the Constantí institute have been confined for a short time.
a diverted flight
a diverted flight
After 7:00 p.m., the Civil Protection of the Generalitat de Catalunya has announced that a flight from the Ryanari company that was covering the Dublin Reus route had to be diverted. Due to the fire, the Reus Airport had to be confined and the flight, which had to arrive at 8:05 p.m., was altered.
