Tarragona inaugurates the remodeling of Canyelles street
Today, Wednesday, the remodeling works on Canyelles Street have been inaugurated, which began last April and had a budget of €425,000, of which €316,000 came from the Next Generation Funds.
In his speech, Mayor Pau Ricomà highlighted that "this comprehensive remodeling is the first big step in the future Corsini Island, a space in which the pedestrian will be the main protagonist". Ricomà added that “this action is part of the city's commitment to giving more prominence to people. We want to fill the squares and streets with life, that they be meeting spaces between neighbors and neighbors”.
The Minister for Territory and Sustainability, Xavier Puig, explained that "we have transformed the street into a friendly and accessible square, with the presence of green, shade and with many benches so that it becomes a meeting point". For her part, the Minister of Parks and Gardens, Elvira Vidal, has expressed that "we celebrate the inauguration of Canyelles street with green areas, making a space that claims the recovery of a neuralgic point".
After the reform, Canyelles is converted entirely by pedestrians, except for emergency vehicles. The paving of the street has been changed and benches have been installed and the old flowerbeds have been replaced by large planters, which also serve as a rest and meeting area for pedestrians. Another aspect of the intervention to highlight is the greater role of green.
In total, more than fifteen different species have been planted, suitable for the space. Rustic plants that withstand drought well have been sought, such as lime trees, troanas and bordas plum trees; shrubs and herbaceous plants such as gallardia, senecio, begonias and gazanias, among others; as well as floral and upholstered ornaments such as pistachios and poes. A new remote-managed irrigation system has also been installed to guarantee efficient consumption. Finally, the intervention has been used to bury the telephone and low voltage networks.
The inauguration has concluded with a street show offered by the charanga Pujats de To accompanied by the Camaleon company.
