Salou will lead the search for a national plan for sun and beach destinations

Salou is preparing to assume for the first time the presidency of the Sun and Beach Alliance of Tourist Municipalities (AMT), the body that encompasses the eight main coastal destinations in Spain. The mayor, Pere Granados, will become the new president of this association on November 28 in the framework of a new congress that was created to generate debate and exchange of experiences in the sector. The transformation of destinations, framed in sustainability and digitization criteria, and the search for a specific financing model for tourist municipalities will focus the work of the AMT in the coming months.

Adeje, Arona, Benidorm, Calvià, Lloret de Mar, Salou, San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Torremolinos are the eight towns that make up this association and that represent around 15% of available hotel beds throughout the country and close to 20% of overnight stays which are registered annually. The Alliance of Tourist Municipalities was born in 2017 with the aim of addressing the common problems that these cities face in terms of financing, as well as working jointly towards the digitization of the sector, sustainability, accessibility and cooperation between destinations.

"The main challenge we have ahead of us is working to incorporate a definition of a tourist municipality in order to achieve a new financing system," explains Granados. In this sense, he considers it "of vital importance" that this distinction be introduced into the current legislation so that it is recognized, "by law", a category of municipality that actually already exists. “Right now all the municipalities enter based on the registered population. On the other hand, tourist municipalities must assume a series of much larger services to meet the needs of the population that visits us », he details.

"The main challenge is to include the definition of a tourist municipality to achieve a new financing system", Pere Granados (mayor of Salou)

This is precisely one of the founding objectives of the AMT de Sol y Playa and “it is one of the pillars on which more work is currently being done in collaboration with the Secretary of State for Tourism, since the current central government is demonstrating great responsibility and sensitivity to this problem, "adds Granados.

The last meetings of the AMT have served to advance in this process of defining a tourist municipality. In fact, the Alliance is already preparing a study to be delivered to the ministry in the coming months and to serve as the basis for a new financing model and, at the same time, ensure that in 2023 there is a special national plan for tourism of sun and beach, an initiative that has also been signed by the central government.
