San Juan de Gaztelugatxe will reopen visits to the public on April 25. After more than a year closed due to a landslide, it will be possible to access the tourist enclave again after the works to recover access.
Although cannot be visited this Easterthe opening of the islet is imminent and it already has a date: April 25.
On January 7, 2021, the Diputación closed the accesses to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe after a large landslide occurred in the area between the intersection of the accesses by Urizarreta and Ermu and the platform prior to the start of the stairs that lead to the hermitage
After an initial assessment, “it was decided to expand the scope of the study, including the area of the pedestrian path that descends from Urizarreta and the path that runs between Urizarreta and the Lurgorri recreational area, as new ground movements were found throughout the area.
In addition, a first study determined that it was necessary to carry out additional topographic control and geotechnical investigation work to determine the corrective measures to be applied with the aim of avoiding new episodes of landslides in the entire area, so that Gaztelugatxe could reopen with the maximum possible guarantees. .
During these fifteen months, multiple improvements have been made on the entire slope of the enclave to prevent new earth movements. These works have been carried out in the upper areas first to gradually allow the visit to Gaztelugatxe and in a later phase they have been carried out in the area most affected by the collapse.
Parallel to the works, a measurement system has been installed to monitor the movements that could occur along the slope of the biotope, so that the terrain is constantly analyzed to guarantee the safety of people who approach this place.
